Mackay Bulk Sugar Terminal is the largest bulk sugar storage facility in the world. Located at the Port of Mackay, it serves as the central export hub for the diverse mills of the Mackay, Proserpine, and Sarina districts. The facility is a critical asset in the Australian sugar industry, consolidating raw sugar production from both Mackay Sugar and Wilmar Sugar mills for export to international markets.
History
Establishment
Prior to the late 1950s, the export of sugar from the Mackay region was a slow, labour intensive process. Raw sugar was bagged at the mills and transported to the River Wharves in the Pioneer River, where it was manually loaded into ships' holds. The limitations of the river port, combined with the inefficiency of handling millions of jute bags, created a significant bottleneck for the expanding industry.[1]
The Mackay Bulk Sugar Terminal was the pioneer facility for the state's transition to bulk handling. Officially opened on 27 July 1957, it was the first of the modern bulk terminals to be commissioned in Queensland. Its success proved the viability of the bulk handling concept and served as the blueprint for the subsequent construction of terminals at Lucinda (1958), Townsville (1959), and Cairns (1964).
Expansion
The terminal began with a single storage shed (Shed 1) but expanded rapidly to keep pace with the region's booming production. Shed 2 was added shortly after the opening, followed by further expansions in the ensuing decades. Today, the facility comprises four massive storage sheds, giving it a total holding capacity of approximately 750,000 tonnes—the highest of any single terminal in the global network.[2]
The terminal's catchment area has expanded significantly over time. While it originally served the local mills of the Pioneer Valley, the rationalisation of the industry saw it absorb the export duties for the Proserpine Mill to the north and the Plane Creek Mill (Sarina) to the south.

Storage Capacity
The facility features four bulk storage sheds. Shed 1 is the original structure, while Sheds 2, 3, and 4 were added progressively. The combined capacity allows the terminal to store three quarters of a million tonnes of product, providing a strategic buffer against shipping delays or fluctuations in global demand.
Receival Logistics
Mackay is unique in its "dual mode" receival capability, utilising both road and heavy rail:
- Road: Sugar from the nearby Racecourse and Farleigh mills is transported to the terminal by a fleet of purpose built bulk sugar trucks.
- Rail: The terminal is connected to the Queensland Rail network via the Harbour Branch line. This 1067 mm (3 ft 6 in) gauge line allows for the delivery of bulk sugar trains from the more distant Marian, Proserpine, and Plane Creek mills. Unlike the Lucinda terminal, which uses narrow gauge cane trains, Mackay's rail loop is designed for main line rollingstock.[3]
Shiploading
The terminal utilises Wharf 3 at the Port of Mackay. The loading system consists of a travelling gantry loader fed by a high speed conveyor belt from the sheds. The loader has a design capacity of approximately 1,400 tonnes per hour.
Refining Operations
Adjacent to the bulk terminal is the Racecourse Refinery's port packaging facility. While the refinery itself is located inland at the Racecourse Mill, finished white sugar is transported to the port for export or distribution. This co-location allows the Port of Mackay to export both raw and refined sugar products.
