Mourilyan Sugar Mill was a sugar mill located approximately 8 kilometres south of Innisfail, Queensland. Named after the nearby Mourilyan Harbour, it operated for more than 120 years as a central industrial and social landmark in the Cassowary Coast region. Despite surviving numerous tropical cyclones throughout the 20th century, the mill was permanently closed in 2006 after sustaining irreparable structural damage during Cyclone Larry.

History

Establishment

Mourilyan Mill was one of the oldest sugar processing facilities in Australia, established in 1884. It played a vital role in the economic development of the district, providing employment for generations of workers from diverse backgrounds. The mill's location was strategic, leveraging the nearby harbour which had been charted in 1872.

Operational History

The development of Mourilyan Harbour from 1960 to 1990 transformed the region into a global player in the sugar trade. In 1960, the Mourilyan Bulk Sugar Terminal was opened, replacing labour intensive sack handling with a high speed conveyor system capable of loading ships at several hundred tonnes per hour.

Further expansion in 1962 deepened the harbour to accommodate international vessels up to 180 metres in length, facilitating exports to markets in Japan, Canada, and the United Kingdom.

By the 1990s, logistics began to shift. The mill became part of a broader network of Queensland Sugar Limited (QSL) assets, often handling sugar from other local mills such as South Johnstone.

Closure and Legacy

The end of the mill was precipitated by a catastrophic weather event. On 20 March 2006, Category 4 Cyclone Larry crossed the coast at Innisfail, dealing a direct hit to Mourilyan. The mill sustained structural failures to critical main buildings, including the shredder and boiler stations.

Following a detailed engineering assessment by the owners, Bundaberg Sugar (a subsidiary of Finasucre), it was determined that the cost of rebuilding to modern standards exceeded 10 million dollars. In May 2006, it was announced that the mill would not reopen. The remaining cane supply was diverted to the South Johnstone and Babinda mills.

Today, the site's history is preserved at the Australian Sugar Heritage Centre in the Mourilyan township, which houses photographs, memorabilia, and retired locomotives.

Infrastructure

Tramway

The mill operated a 610 mm (2 ft) narrow gauge tramway network vital for hauling cane from the paddocks to the mill.

In 1997, the infrastructure connecting the mill to the export terminal changed significantly with the decommissioning of the "Jetty Line". While the cane railway remained active for harvest collection, the transport of processed raw sugar to the harbour wharf shifted entirely to high capacity road vehicles.
