Cairns Bulk Sugar Terminal

Before the construction of the dedicated bulk terminal, sugar exporting in Cairns was centred at the historic city wharves, specifically at White's Shed. This facility used a mechanical conveyor system to stack bagged sugar, which was a labour-intensive process. As production volumes increased and the rest of the state moved to bulk handling, the need for a modern facility became apparent.

The Cairns Bulk Sugar Terminal officially opened in 1964. Its location at Portsmith, south of the city centre, allowed for the construction of large storage sheds and a dedicated wharf with a travelling ship loader. The terminal was unique in the far northern network as it relied heavily on road transport for receivals from the Mossman Mill, located 75 kilometres to the north, while Hambledon and Mulgrave mills utilised rail connections until their respective closures or redirection.

The terminal's operational scope narrowed significantly in the twenty-first century. The closure of Hambledon Mill in 1991 and the redirection of Mulgrave Mill's output to Mourilyan left the Mossman Central Mill as the sole supplier to the Cairns facility. With the closure of the Mossman Mill in late 2025, the terminal's role as an active sugar export hub has effectively concluded, leaving its future function as a storage facility or alternative bulk port under consideration.
