The mill was a product of the Sugar Works Act of 1911, which aimed to support independent growers through the creation of central mills. When it opened on 15 December 1915, it was one of the most modern facilities in Australia, specifically designed to handle the high volumes of cane produced in the fertile Babinda Creek district.

Following its opening, Babinda experienced a rapid population increase. Census data indicates the population grew fivefold between 1911 and 1921 as workers arrived from across Europe and Asia. Italian, Greek, Maltese, and Danish immigrants joined Anglo-Irish settlers, creating a multicultural community centred around the seasonal cycles of the mill. In 1924, the facility transitioned from government ownership to a grower-owned co-operative. This was a landmark shift, as it was the first mill to be handed over to local farmers under the Primary Producers' Co-operative Association Act, giving them direct control over their economic future.

The mill was not merely a collection of buildings but the heart of a vast logistical network. It operated an extensive two foot gauge tramway system that stretched across the district to transport harvested cane from the fields. In 1987, the era of the local co-operative ended when the mill was sold to Bundaberg Sugar. During the late 20th century, the industry faced immense pressure from falling global sugar prices, leading some farmers to diversify into fruit growing. While the high rainfall typical of the Babinda area often led to bumper crops, such as the 2003 harvest, it also made the infrastructure vulnerable to extreme weather. In 2006, Cyclone Larry caused approximately 10 million dollars in damage to the mill buildings. Although repairs were made, the financial strain on the operation continued to mount.

=== The Final Years and Closure ===
The Maryborough Sugar Factory acquired the assets of Bundaberg Sugar, including the Babinda Mill, in early 2011. Shortly after this acquisition, Cyclone Yasi, a category 5 storm, struck the coast. The combination of structural damage from the cyclone, high maintenance costs, and the need for significant capital investment led the new owners to the conclusion that the mill was no longer viable. The mill officially ceased operations on 23 February 2011, marking the end of 96 years of crushing.

Despite being added to the Queensland Heritage Register in 2005 for its historical and social significance, the mill was ultimately demolished in 2013. The removal of the iconic chimney and the massive industrial skeleton fundamentally altered the town's skyline.
